The Germanium Fuzz is a modern PCB build of the classic germanium Fuzz Face circuit. The most difficult aspect of building a germanium fuzz face correctly is transistor selection. The original transistor type, the Newmarket NKT275, has become extremely scarce, and germanium transistor specs can vary substantially even among transistors of the same type, which can make finding suitable substitutes difficult. Often some degree of manual transistor measurement/sorting is required if building the stock circuit. This project uses our pre-selected Fuzz Face transistor set to take the difficulty out of the process. The transistor set includes both transistors and the 4 necessary resistors for the circuit to “bias” and operate correctly. The Germanium Fuzz can be mounted in the enclosure via the board-mounted potentiometers, but it also has two M3-sized mounting holes for optional offboard wiring of the potentiometers. Note that this build uses battery power only like the original units. The Fuzz Face circuit draws very little current, and a 9V battery will last a very long time before it needs to be replaced. Alternatively, the board can take a standard 9V power supply, but in that case special considerations must be given to the fact that this is a positive-ground effect.
