Tim Escobedo's final version of Hemmo P.'s Bazz Fuss: a single Darlington (one MPSA13 or two 2N3904) with diodes from collector to base, here one 1N4148 one way and three diodes the other for more volume and smoother clipping. A 10k rheostat on the emitter sets the gain from fairly tame to fuzz. An optional input transformer (primary winding only) preserves the circuit's tone when it follows a buffered effect or active pickups. The post calls it a DIY classic to tweak freely.
The input transformer (Mouser 42TM018, primary only: 10k impedance, 550 ohm DC resistance) can be omitted when the pedal is driven directly from a guitar with passive pickups. Two 2N3904 in a Darlington pair can replace the MPSA13; other Darlingtons will probably work. The post suggests tweaking the diodes and the input and output capacitors.
