A single BS170 MOSFET booster with a very high input impedance, a 9.1V zener from gate to source and a reverse-log 5K pot in the source that sets the gain (the 'Crackle Okay' control). The post quotes Estragon's analysis: the source pot moves the drain voltage from about 7.2V to 4V, the gain from 0 to almost 40 dB, and the input impedance from 3.3M down to 140K.

The drawing says almost every component can be altered; experiment. IvIark's vero places the zener slightly differently; the post says it makes no difference to the tone.
