Monstrous Fuzz of Science and Legend! DIY

Hello, my name is Zack and this is my business card. This DIY project is called the Monstrous Fuzz of Science and Legend! It's a based on the Astrotone Fuzz/ Sam Ash Fuzz, a simple two transistor fuzz which can employ a variety of silicon NPN transistors.

Some Notes: The Level potentiometer is an A10k. I thought I put that on there but I didn't. If the marking on the back isn't clear, the pot is mounted on the backside and away from the PCB.

The "+" and "-" pads for the power connection is a little hard to read. The left pad is "-" and the right pad is "+".

I found a couple PN3565 in my drawer that sounded amazing, 2N3903 sounded pretty good, 2N5088 or the like will work, any transistor with CBE or reverse pinout.

The 1N914 diode in the middle row (the small 1N914 with the text diagonal) was originally a 3M3 resistor but a diode makes it really gated and nasty, try the resistor for a little bit smoother fuzz.

The two 1N914 diodes at the bottom of the right row are the clipping diodes. I found I like 1N914 best but I made the footprint larger so you could even try germanium diodes there, be aware that the volume level will drop significantly with germanium diodes.

470n capacitors at the input and output are quite large and let a lot of bass through. Take them down to 47n like in the original if you'd prefer less bass content.

Other value adjustments I made were minor: The 1M2 resistor was a 1M in the original schematic.

This was made to fit in a 1590BB so that it'd be really easy to build for beginners. You might be able to fit it in a 125B if you get creative.

There will be no faceplate available for this. Get creative with your case design.
