The original op-amp and JFET compressor that the Mr. Squishy is based on: a JFET shunts the signal to ground ahead of an op-amp gain stage, and the rectified output turns the JFET on harder as the signal grows. The post shows it for comparison and says it gives transparent compression with quick attack and release.
