A simple hybrid Fuzz Face: a silicon 2N3906 for Q1 and a germanium PNP for Q2, with a pregain pot at the input in place of the usual fuzz control. The post says the silicon/germanium pairing set the foundation for many later boutique fuzzes.
Q1 can be a PN2907, NTE159 or similar; Q2 any good germanium PNP (AC128, NKT275, 2SB173). Set the bias with the 10K trim to -4.5V between Q2's collector and ground, or by ear so the sound cleans up with the guitar volume a little below half. Socket Q1 and Q2 and try several germaniums.
