Colin Raffel's LM386 gain-driven oscillator, given in the post as a related, more versatile 386 design. A Gate switch starves the chip's supply through a 1k pot or a 2k2 resistor, and an Oscillate switch adds a cap and Freq pot between pins 5 and 7 so the chip oscillates at a rate set by the signal level and the pot.
The 1k gain pot gives a small range and 5k is too big (per the drawing). The tone cap can be .047 or .1uF; a lower value gives less top cut. The drawing marks the 47k / Level / Tone section as a volume stage that you may replace with something better.
