A schematic from a 1970s Japanese electronics textbook with the same structure as the Stone Grey: an LF356 op-amp gain stage driving two MC14049B CMOS inverter stages into clipping. Its controls differ: an Amplitude pot sets the op-amp gain, an Over Drive pot sets the drive into the first inverter, and a Bias pot shifts the first inverter's operating point. The author thinks the dual gain control and the bias control are worth exploring.
The author found it wanted a little less treble and more bass, and suggests experimenting with the bias control.
