From the vendor

Demeter's optical studio-style compressor: an LF353 input buffer, a VTL5C10 vactrol shunting the signal to the half-supply rail, a gain stage set by an internal trimmer, and a rectifier that drives the vactrol's LED from the output (a feedback design, which the post explains gives the illusion of extra sustain). The author has built several and recommends it.

Use a real VTL5C10 or build an optocoupler that matches its specs.
