The Refraction is an optical tremolo designed around the current-production XVive VTL5C1 vactrol. The response of a vactrol is not perfectly linear and has a slight but noticeable sluggishness to the slew rate, resulting in a smooth modulation sound that some describe as having a vintage character. Optical tremolo circuits were also used in a variety of classic tube amps like the Deluxe Reverb, which contributes to their association with “vintage” sounds. The Refraction uses a simple triangle wave LFO for volume modulation, and has speed, depth, and level controls. By leaving out extraneous features like LFO shape and symmetry and using a readily-available modern vactrol, the Refraction is a very simple, low parts-count optical tremolo build which fits in a 1590N1/125B or Gorva C65 with plenty of space left for an optional 9V battery. The Refraction can be mounted via the potentiometers, but it also has two M3-sized mounting holes for optional offboard wiring of the potentiometers.
